Introduced in 1675 by John Ogilby, strip maps were maps of the road rather than the landscape. As a map that the player's character would have in hand, it gives enough information for the character to move into the area. As an RP aid, it gives the player information about the setting without revealing too much about the surroundings and the surprises that may await.
